Math Trailblazers—A conceptually-based math program with emphasis on problem-solving; understanding mathematical ideas; structuring cooperative learning opportunities; using language to communicate mathematical ideas; making meaning; and connecting mathematics to other subjects and the real world
Step Up to Writing—A systematic approach for improving students’ writing skills what focuses on expository, narrative and personal narrative writing
Rigby Literacy by Design—A comprehensive approach to reading and writing instruction that includes modeled, shared and interactive reading and writing; guided and independent reading and writing; integration of standards-based science and social studies skills with literacy skills; systematic reading instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension; and systematic writing instruction in writing forms and organizational patterns, writing process and writing traits
6 + 1 Trait Writing—A powerful way to learn and use a common language to refer to characteristics of writing, as well as to create a common vision of what “good” writing looks like, including ideas and content; organization; voice; word choice; sentence fluency; conventions; and presentation
Student Support Programs
Title I Reading—Research-based strategy and skill instruction for struggling readers, in addition to classroom reading instruction. Click here for more information about Title I.
Reading and Math Assistants—Certified teachers that teach reading and math groups, providing both enrichment opportunities and remediation as necessary
Extended School Day—Intensive after-school intervention program for students in the areas of reading and math Click here for more information about ESD.

Bigs in Schools—Mentoring program sponsored by Big Brothers Big Sisters in which high school role models are matched with West students to work on social skills and building healthy relationships
Olweus Bullying Prevention Program—All students and staff members at West Elementary participate in this bullying prevention program. All staff members are expected to support our efforts to prevent bullying in our school, and address bullying incidences when they occur. West Elementary asks each student to strive each day to be a “H.E.R.O.” (Helping Everyone Respect Others).
Student Activities
Literature Club—Meets every other month during lunch to discuss books and share a love for reading
Odyssey of the Mind—Meets before school and teaches students how to think divergently by providing open-ended problems that appeal to a wide range of interests
Student Nutrition Advisory Council—Provides input on our Food Service program and learns more about nutritious eating habits
Fifth Grade Only Activities
Robotics Club—Explores technology, math and science using the Lego’s Mindstorms Robotics program
Band—Musical instrument performance group that meets during the school day
Early Riser’s Choir—Vocal performance group that meets before school from 7:45-8:05 a.m.
