Hello, I am Jody Havice , the art teacher at Central and West Elementary. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education K-12 from Kansas State University. I am currently in the process of working towards a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a Classroom Technology Specialty. This is my ninth year of teaching and my sixth year of teaching for USD 320 as the K-5 art teacher. I am currently serving as the Secretary and Label Saving Chairperson for the West PTO.
What is the Elementary Art Program?
To give you some background information, the elementary art program in USD 320 is centered on a Discipline-Based Art Education (DBAE) approach. That means for each project:
- students participate in art history lessons about a specific artist or group of artists;
- students learn the art criticism process used for describing works of art from simple details to complex ideas;
- students work with aesthetics, creating a piece of art.
In addition to DBAE, the students are also exposed to reading, writing, math, and problem-solving with each lesson to help support the School Improvement Plans for Central and West Elementary. This all takes place during their forty-minute once-a-week time frame. Therefore, in order to cover all of the necessary information, our lessons generally take several weeks to complete.
Where is Miss Fowles?
My time is divided up evenly between Central and West Elementary. Over the course of a week, I have the pleasure to work with 29 different groups of students.
