Budget Reduction Information
For those who have been keeping track of the financial picture out of Topeka, you will know that there are continuing concerns with the fiscal situation unfolding for our state. The impact of this on USD 320 has been cuts to the coming year’s budget in the amount of approximately $310,000.

Chester Drawers Visits Central Elementary

Chester Drawers and 2nd grader Jacalynn Nider
Eddie Bowman, aka Chester Drawers, author, entertainer, songwriter, and inspirational speaker came to Central Elementary on Wednesday, April 29 to entertain the children. He is from the Branson, Missouri area and has written over 20 children's books. He entertained the children with stories and songs, and autograhed books at the end of his program.

Gold Seal Chapter Award of Merit!
Students earn State Rankings!

Sixty-four members of the Wamego High School Chapter of Future Business Leaders of America attended the State Conference in Topeka on March 24th and 25th. Adviser Mrs. Karen Hynek accompanied the group, along with chaperones Anne Jardine, Travis MacDonald and Maria O’Halloran.
The WHS FBLA chapter was one of 13 chapters from across the state (out of 111) to earn the Hollis and Kitty Guy Gold Seal Chapter Award of Merit. This recognition is based on the chapter’s active participation in programs and projects throughout the year that advanced the goals of FBLA-PBL.

WHS FBLA Students Place 1st in the state of Kansas
and earn national rankings!

BJ Kohler and Lane Eichman, members of Wamego High School’s Future Business Leaders of America, recently competed in the National FBLA Virtual Business Challenge, placing 1st in the state of Kansas and earning a national ranking. This is an official FBLA competitive event sponsored by Knowledge Matters and FBLA. Students use highly visual simulation software to manage a distribution center. Teams are ranked based upon their distribution center’s cumulative profit after running the simulation for an entire virtual year. Each challenge lasts for one month, and the students may work through as many virtual years as time will allow. During the fall and spring challenge they were able to manage various aspects of their business such as truck fleet, workflow and risk management at their distribution center.

Members of Wamego High School’s FCCLA chapter recently participated in the 2009 FCCLA State Leadership Showcase “Making the Band: SLS Edition” production held March 29-31, 2009 in Wichita, KS. Attendees participated in individual or team competitions, as well as workshop and sessions that challenged members to get informed, and involved through the power of FCCLA. The FCCLA State Leadership Showcase meeting was attended by chapter members, advisors, and guests throughout the state.
The “Make the Band: SLS Edition” theme was reinforced by FCCLA members rocking it out to make FCCLA ….The “Bass” of Life by recognizing members and chapters for their participation in their families, careers, and communities over the past year. Members had the opportunity to listen to a keynote speakers and “rock it out’ by attending track sessions during the morning.

Students participated in the county-wide newspaper recycling drive.

West Elementary students recently participated in the county-wide newspaper recycling drive. West students were encouraged to collect newspapers at home, weigh them, and then bring them to school or take them to the recycling trailer where they would be recycled and sold for a profit. Money raised from the sale of the newspapers will go toward the Pottawatomie County recycling program. Students at West competed to see which class could collect the most newspapers with the winning class earning a popcorn party.
WHS Raider Power lifters in Competition!
Wamego High School’s power lifting team traveled to Hoyt and Pomona, KS to compete in power lifting competitions.

West Elementary Selected to Participate in Cans for Conservation Program at Sunset Zoo

West Elementary enjoy zoo visits to its school with live animals, animal artifacts, stories, and activities focusing on conservation.
West Elementary is one of a handful of schools selected to participate in Cans for Conservation, an activity sponsored by Sunset Zoo in Manhattan. For six weeks, from now to April 20, students will have the opportunity to learn about the importance of recycling, as well as different habitats around the world.
